Museu de Arte Contemporânea

Vila Mariana, São Paulo

Contemporary eyes

I think the new Contemporary Art Museum is beautiful. Administration transferred its collection from the old address, in USP's campus, to the building that used to be of Traffic Department, designed by Oscar Niemeyer - which is at Vila Mariana, right next to Ibirapuera Park.

This renewal of MAC also brought to the eyes of the crowd a gorgeous part of the collection that was not accessible. And speaking of eyes, the place is a feast for them - it has one of the greatest views of S.P, from the museum's terrace - you can see Ibirapuera Park, the Obelisk... And every time I go, there's something nice to see. The exhibitions that take place in one of the annexes are wonderful.

I go there once a year, more or less, and I wanna go more.

Viajo highlights

The Contemporary Art Museum of São Paulo was inaugurated inside University of São Paulo in 1963, being the receiver of the collection of the old Modern Art Museum.

Its collection has about 10 thousand pieces - oil paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, conceptual works and objects -, a great cultural asset nationally and internationally, which includes the works of Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Alfredo Volpi, Lygia Clark and many others.

The museum is specialized in the Western production of the 20th century and the idea is to maintain the old building at USP running for academic purposes, such as archive research, with libraries and teaching classes.
