Yo, Ney! Did that record come in yet? Can you get that record for me? That’s the talk I have at Gringo Discos and that’s where I buy my records. It’s located right beside Galeria do Rock, deep Downtown, and it’s been there for a long time.
It’s not just a record store: Ney cuts some slack to everyone who’s a DJ, works with music or those who just want to get their hands on some precious findings.
You can meet every DJ in town buying stuff there, the main new releases are there, LPs and CDs – whatever’s more in line with Brazilian and international black music, the type of material that can be used in a variety of mixes.
Gringos ends up being really a partner for music professionals because Ney sometimes sponsors DJs that are, for example, going on competitions abroad, he even helps them with equipment – he is really a facilitator of the scene and that’s too cool.
It is a typical gallery store: the low ceiling, the narrow rows, but it’s stuffed with records and that’s what matters! I always keep an eye on the store’s Instagram because they use to post a photo of a record that just came in and say: “if you’re not fast enough, it’s gone!”
