Classic pork sandwich 24/7

Estadão is an absolute classic in Downtown and of the city. It’s not super cheap and not too expensive either, but I can assure the quality of its food.

It stays open 24 hours a day and you can find all types of people there at each period of time – and it’s always crammed. Where else would you eat, for example, roasted ribs at 3 o’clock in the morning?

And that’s not all of it: spaghetti, rice and beans, some beef hash… everything on the menu is served at all times.

But the pork sandwich is what makes the name of this place – a tradition that I like to order with cheese and in the “canoe” bread, which comes with more filling than usual. A bit of the house’s chili in oil on top and I’m in heaven at any time of the day or night.

They roast over 30 pork legs a day. Up to fifty! But it’s the whole leg – can you imagine how many sandwiches they deliver? Over a thousand every day.

Viajo highlights

Founded in 1968, Estadão Bar e Lanches is located besides the building that used to serve as headquarters for the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo – that’s the origin of the name, such as the publication’s nickname (Estadão means “Big State”).

Since the beginning, it stayed open up to the late hours to supply the hungry journalists that were up all night in the closing of the day’s edition – and even after the newspaper moved out of that building, the 24-7 snack point tradition for the hungry of the night prevailed.
