Jardim Botânico

Água Branca, São Paulo

Naturally alive

The Botanic Garden of São Paulo is one of the few spaces I had not known up until recently – because it is a little far from Downtown. But I came to discover it is one of the most incredible places in town!

It’s basically a very beautiful garden with orchid greenhouses, it has a restaurant in it, plenty of shadow for sitting and reading a book, taking someone on a date, it’s great for picnics…

The first time I went was to make a photo shoot with my little daughter – and it was very pretty!

Viajo highlights

Botanic Garden of São Paulo is part of the Botany Institute and a public place intended for research of plant and fungus groups and their relations with the environment. Preservation and sustainability of the biodiversity of São Paulo and Brazil as a whole are some of their missions.

It was created within a State Park and it also comprises a preservation zone of the Atlantic Forest. The area was retaken by the State in 1917; it served water catchment purposes until 1928, when naturalist Frederico Carlos Hoehne was invited to implement a Botanic Garden in the region – which became official only 10 years later.

It makes for a very pleasant day off for all ages, especially children. There’s even a suspended trail for some “light” adventure! Besides orchidariums and greenhouses, the Garden encompasses lakes, groves, hundreds of tree species, including fruit trees, and rare plants.
